Dating back to the late Edo period, Tochigi onigawara from Tochigi Prefecture, Kantō region, feature oni faces for protection, Kiku (chrysanthemums), karakusa (arabesques), and family crests for auspiciousness. Made from high-quality local clay, carefully refined for strength and weather resistance, they are part of Tochigi’s officially designated traditional crafts. Traditionally they are smoke-fired silver-gray (ibushi-gin) finish, and are known for sharp, detailed carving and elegant proportions.
