Mizunodaira Yaki

Mizunodaira Yaki, a distinguished ceramic from Kumamoto Prefecture's Amakusa region (and part of Amakusa Tōjiki), was founded in 1765 by Tsunebee Okabe. From its inception, it's been renowned for its distinctive namako glaze (namako-yu), a hallmark of its aesthetic. This glaze results in a unique mottled, iridescent surface resembling a sea cucumber's skin, created when two glazes (iron and straw ash) react during firing. While early pieces featured blue namako-yu, the 5th generation's red namako-yu became its national signature by 1877. Traditionally producing elegant tableware and tea utensils, Mizunodaira Yaki continues to flourish, with artisans upholding its unique glazes and techniques. Its heritage was designated a National Traditional Craft in 2003.
