Tsugaru Yaki originates from the Tsugaru region in Aomori prefecture and uses a special process known as “Yakishime.” Yakishime allows the pottery to be made under 1,360 degree celsius of unglazed heat which is what contributes to its unique rusty finish. Tsugaru Yaki’s signature deep brown color comes from high-quality clay sourced from Kanayama Otameike pond located in Goshogawara City, Aomori. The clay and kiln play a substantial role contributing to the bold and colorful pattern on the surface of Tsugaru Yaki pottery.
