Inuyama Yaki

Inuyama Yaki is a distinctive ceramic tradition from Inuyama City, Aichi Prefecture, with its modern history tracing to the mid-1700s. After an initial decline, its legacy was revived in 1810 by Naruse Masatoshi, 7th lord of Inuyama Castle, who established the Maruyama Kiln as an "o-niwa-yaki" (personal garden kiln). This direct patronage led to masterpieces, primarily tea ceremony utensils and decorative items. Inuyama Yaki is renowned for elegant overglaze enamel painting, often in vibrant red and green, featuring cherry blossoms and maple leaves. Other techniques include suminagashi (marbling) and intricate designs. Today, Inuyama Yaki continues to be produced, maintaining the refined aesthetics and historical connection to the Inuyama lords, reflecting a tradition of high-quality, colorful pottery born from feudal patronage.
