Tajima Banko Yaki is entirely handmade, with each piece possessing a unique texture. The hand-forming technique intentionally incorporates fingerprints into the pattern, giving the pottery a vibrant energy and warmth despite its rough finish. Fired at high temperatures without glazing, the fingerprints remain visible, and the light color of the unglazed pottery creates a remarkable impression. A unique feature of Tajima Banko Yaki is the inclusion of a small frog somewhere on the piece, symbolizing the wish "buji ni kaeru" (come home safely), utilizing "kaeru" for both "to come home" and "frog." Sometimes, other elements like dice for "luck" or a "kappa" are added upon request. Tajima Banko Yaki is a Designated Traditional Craft of Fukushima Prefecture.
