Kōshū Onigawara refers to the traditional craft of demon-faced roof tiles from the Kōshū region, which corresponds mainly to Yamanashi Prefecture in central Japan. The Kōshū region often faced harsh weather conditions (heavy snow and rain), so thick, durable tiles were essential. These onigawara share the same core purpose as other regional varieties: to protect buildings from evil spirits and disasters, but they have their own regional traits, often featuring bold oni designs mixed with crest symbols, influenced by temple architecture. While there are a few traditional tile-making workshops in Yamanashi, this local craft is considered rare and endangered.
