Shiraiwa Yaki

Shiraiwa Yaki’s origin can be traced back to 1771, when Matsumoto Unshichi established the first kiln in Akita Prefecture’s Shiraiwa area. Shiraiwa Yaki is known for its practical yet artistic design and is characterized by the contrast between its reddish-brown clay color and deep, pale blue Namako-yu. By the late 19th century the Shiraiwa Yaki factories faced a decrease in demand and ceased production. Fortunately, after decades of testing to revive the Namako-Yu glaze, the Shiraiwa Yaki method was officially restored in 1975. Today, the kilns produce new works suited to modern life and design, while still rooted in the Shiraiwa Yaki tradition.
