砥部焼
Tobe Yaki
清らかな白磁の肌に藍の絵模様、やや厚手の飾り気のない形、材質の堅さに特色があります。一般的な磁器と比べて重みがあり、手に取ったときの安定感が抜群で、日常使いにとても適しています。見た目の美しさと実用性を兼ね備えている。砥部焼の器に多く見られるのが、藍色の手描き模様です。唐草、太陽、十草（とくさ）といった伝統的な図柄が多く使われ、素朴で温かみのある印象を与えてくれます。この絵付けは職人の手で一つひとつ描かれており、同じ模様でも微妙な筆の勢いや線の太さが異なり、それぞれに個性が宿っています。民芸運動の推進者柳宗悦、バーナード・リーチ、浜田庄司らが砥部を訪れた際、機械化されている他の産地に比べ、手仕事の技術が残っていることを高く評価しました。陶芸家の富本憲吉（文化勲章受賞）も訪れ、砥部焼の近代的デザインを後押ししました。
Tobe Yaki, a distinctive porcelain from Ehime Prefecture, originated in the mid-1700s producing practical daily ware. Characterized by its pure white body and indigo hand-painted patterns like karakusa (arabesque) or tokusa (horsetail), its robust, unadorned shapes offer comforting stability. Praised by the Mingei (Folk Craft) movement for preserving handcraft, each piece has unique individuality that blends visual beauty with outstanding practicality, Tobe Yaki's enduring appeal lies in its durable material, classic aesthetic, and artisan's touch. Designated a National Traditional Craft in 1976, it continues production today.
