Jishoji Yaki

Jiseijiyaki is derived from the name of the area, and was a type of pottery that flourished in Jiseiji, Shimoakima, Annaka City from around the middle of the Edo period (1603-1868), until it was discontinued in 1905 when the last kiln operator moved to Mashiko. In 1979, Jiseiji pottery was revived using clay from Shimoakima after much research based on Jiseiji pottery pieces from that time. The Jiseiji ware is the fruit of his natural craftsmanship and skill, and is the fruit of his long hours of six to seven days and nights in the climbing kiln and the anagama kiln, where he was baptized by the flames of the pinewood fire. The pottery is the only traditional craft designated by the prefecture and is highly regarded in Gunma Prefecture.
