Sanuki soushoku Kawara

Sanuki Sōshoku Kawara are decorative roof tiles produced in the Sanuki region, which corresponds to present-day Kagawa Prefecture on Shikoku Island. These tiles are a traditional craft that developed alongside the architectural culture of temples, shrines, and high-ranking residences in the region. The local clay from Kagawa is suitable for fine detail work, featuring Oni (demon) faces (similar to onigawara), dragons, waves, lotus flowers, family crests, and Buddhist symbols. Sanuki Sōshoku Kawara is recognized as a Traditional Craft of Kagawa Prefecture, as the craft is valued for its fusion of durability and artistic detail, especially on historic pilgrimage temples on Shikoku. Today, artisans still produce these tiles by hand.
