Akou Unka Yaki, from Akō City, Hyogo Prefecture, is a designated Hyogo Prefectural Traditional Craft celebrated for its unique, unglazed beauty. Its defining characteristic lies in captivating colors and patterns drawn directly in the kiln by flame and smoke, evoking a burning sunset sky. For generations, it was considered a "phantom pottery" due to its mysterious clay and lost firing methods. The original Unka-yaki was by Edo period potter Oshima Kokoku, but precise techniques for creating ivory, black, and fiery red patterns were lost, leading to its disappearance. Dedicated efforts since 1979 successfully revived the technique in 1982. Today, Akou Unka Yaki is cherished as a new, distinctive local craft, a triumph of reawakening lost artistic tradition.
