Echizen Onigawara is a traditional Japanese craft from the Echizen region of Fukui Prefecture. Echizen has been one of Japan’s key ceramic regions for centuries, also known for Echizen ware (Echizen-yaki), and this tile craft reflects the region’s refined ceramic aesthetics. Known for powerful yet elegant carving, featuring fierce oni (demon) faces, but also dragons, floral patterns, and Buddhist motifs, often paired with crest symbols. The fine Echizen clay is highly resistant to weathering, and typically smoke-fires dark gray to black (ibushi-gin finish).
