Oumi Shimoda Yaki

Oumi Shimoda Yaki, from the Shimoda area of Shiga Prefecture, is known for its simple patterns and deep gosu (cobalt blue pigment) color. Its unique texture and "fuuai" (character/ambiance) come from locally sourced clay. Founded around 1750, the kiln primarily produced everyday items like teacups and bowls for local markets. Production ceased in 1989 due to lack of a successor but was fortunately revived five years later with local community support. Today, Oumi Shimoda Yaki continues to operate, preserving its distinctive craft rooted in the region's cultural heritage.
