Tenjin Sama Ningyō

天神様とは、平安時代随一の学者・文人、政治家であり、「学問の神様」として知られる菅原道真公のことです。道真公が亡くなると、その才能や真面目でひたむきな人柄から、天神様として崇められるようになりました。江戸時代に入ると、子どもたちが学ぶ寺子屋の普及とともに、天神様は学問の神、書道の神として、また子どもの守り神として慕われるようになりました。

天神様 (Tenjin Sama) refers to the deified spirit of Sugawara no Michizane, a scholar, poet, and politician from Japan's Heian period. He is venerated as the god of learning, scholarship, and education. Small-sized, hand-painted figures in gofun or pottery styles (often around 15–25 cm tall), are typically displayed on a base or small stand for home worship or prayers before important exams. Shrines dedicated to him, known as Tenmangu or Tenjin Shrines, are found throughout Japan
