Yamagata Kokeshi

Yamagata Kokeshi (山形こけし) are traditional wooden dolls from Yamagata Prefecture, Japan. Recognized for their charming and unique designs, these dolls typically feature a round head and a tapered body, often painted with colorful floral patterns and expressive facial features. The making process begins with selecting high-quality wood, usually from cherry or zelkova trees. Artisans carve the dolls using a lathe and then hand-paint them with natural pigments, focusing on intricate details and vibrant colors. Yamagata Kokeshi are cherished for their artistic quality and are an important part of Japan's folk art heritage, often used as decorative pieces or gifts.
