Honjou Kokeshi

Honjou Kokeshi (本荘こけし) are a traditional style of kokeshi dolls originating from Honjou, Akita Prefecture. These wooden dolls are known for their distinct cylindrical bodies, large heads, and simple facial features, often accompanied by painted floral or geometric patterns. The process begins with carving the body and head from wood, typically using a lathe for precision. Once shaped, the doll is hand-painted with natural pigments, focusing on minimalistic designs and subtle expressions. Honjou Kokeshi are celebrated for their simplicity and elegance, reflecting the traditional craftsman- ship of the region.
