Edo Oshi-e (江戸押絵) is a craft from the Edo period (1603–1868), involving the creation of raised, three-dimensional textile pictures. The word "oshi-e" translates to "pressed pictures," where layers of fabric, often silk or cotton, are cut, padded, and assembled to form relief images. This art form was commonly used to make decorative panels, kabuki actor portraits, or ornaments for festivals and special occasions. It was particularly popular for depicting kabuki scenes or beautiful women (bijin-ga), with the intricate layering adding texture and depth to the figures. Edo Oshi-e showcases Japan's attention to detail and craftsmanship in textiles and decorative arts.
