Koshigaya Kacchu

Koshigaya Kacchū (越谷甲冑)—traditional miniature samurai armors and warrior dolls produced in Koshigaya City, Saitama Prefecture. Though often referred to as “dolls,” these are properly considered Gogatsu Ningyō (五月人形) featuring detailed suits of armor rather than full-bodied figurines. These are displayed as part of traditional Children’s Day sets. The making process involves crafting the armor’s components from materials like leather or metal, which are then lacquered to prevent damage. Artisans bind the pieces with silk cords and add intricate decorations, such as family crests and gold accents. Koshigaya Kacchu showcases a blend of traditional techniques and aesthetic detailing, emphasizing both form and function.
