Suruga Hina Dolls, crafted in Shizuoka City, are larger than typical dolls due to the use of thick rice straw for the body, a nod to the region's rich rice production. Their voluminous garments, made separately for the upper and lower parts, enabled mass production. Suruga Hina Dolls account for 70% of Japan's Hina doll bodies, surpassing Kyoto's production. The most skilled part of their crea- tion is the 'Furitsuke,' or the arrangement of the doll's arms, which reflects the artisan's unique style. Originating from two Tenjin dolls, these dolls evolved during the Edo period, combining techniques from Kyoto and Edo with local craftsmanship.
