Originally developed in Switzerland and Germany in the early 20th Century, Marble Printing is a kind of fabric dyeing technique characterized by vibrant colors and complex patterns. Marble printing no longer exists in Europe, where it originated, and instead, its tradition is carried on by Kyoto Marble, located in Kyoto, Japan. Kyoto Marble uses different colored starches, which are mixed, rolled, and stretched into a desired pattern and then glued together to create a print that will be transferred onto silk fabric. This kind of fabric-dyeing technique allows hundreds of colors to be used in one pattern while also maintaining a three-dimensional and deep quality of colors. Currently, there is only one craftsman in Japan who is able to handle the complex and detailed work of this marble printing technique.
