Yaeyama Jofu fabrics, originating from an archipelago in southwest Okinawa prefecture, are made from the ramie plant found in the area. Yaeyama Jofu dates back to the 15th century, used under the supervision of the Ryukyu Dynasty. The process is completed by hand and includes carefully spinning ramie thread, dying the fabric using naturally grown plants from the island, and then utilizing sun and sea exposure to deepen the colors and pattern on the fabric.
