Tozan Ori, also known as Tozanjima or Sanmejima, is a type of fabric woven with thin cotton threads to create unique, fine, and detailed vertical stripes. Originating from India, it is said to have first been brought to Japan by a Dutch ship in the late 16th century. The fabric is woven tightly using thin, fine threads, giving it a linen-like appearance and a silk-like luster. This fabric was most popular in the Edo Period when, after the Tenpo Reforms, extravagance was discouraged, and the wearing of silk fabrics was banned; Tozan Ori was a popular alternative.
