桐生織

Kiryu ori

~絹の国・群馬県~その東部に位置する桐生市は、かつて「西の西陣、東の桐生」と言われた織物の町で「桐生織」は1300 年の歴史を誇ります。独特の細かい凹凸が特徴で、 単色の経糸に、八色以上の緯糸で文様を描き出します。 三色以上の経糸と二色以上の緯糸で文様を表す織物です。 二重の生地を裏表に現すことで柄を表現する複雑な織物です。

Kiryu brocade (called Kiryu ori in Japanese) is a woven cloth produced in the city of Kiryu, Gunma prefecture. This area has a lush environment with excellent climate and terrain, helping it to be prosperous in the silk industry for years. Kiryu brocade fabrics are widely used for luxury kimono and decorative accessories because of their soft texture. In the past, Kiryu was famous throughout Japan for its silk production and textiles contributions. Now, the city has been pursuing the invigoration of the local textile industry.
