Tsugaru Sakiori, known locally as “Sakuri,” is a traditional weaving technique from the Tsugaru region that features a distinctive texture and rich, time-worn colors. Originating in the mid-Edo period, it developed as a way to repurpose old cotton brought by Kitamae trading ships, turning torn fabric into garments for farmers and fishermen. Sakuri was woven to be soft and thin, offering warmth in snowy climates and elegance for special occasions. Today, the technique is used to create items like coats and bags, often incorporating silk dyed with beech, oak, or apple to enhance its deep hues.
