Shiroishi Kamiko is a kind of fabric made using washi paper. Washi paper, traditional Japanese paper, is made from the bark of a mulberry tree; the bark is then boiled, beaten, and steamed all by hand. Once the mulberry bark is turned into washi paper, the thick washi paper is layered, coated with persimmon tannin or konjac glue, softened by hand, and crafted as paper-based clothing. Known for its high quality, durability, and warmth, it was traditionally used for monks’ robes, samurai coat, and winter clothing. In the Edo period, it became common as winter wear, for belts, and as Kimonos, produced across Japan. Today, in Shiroishi, rather than clothing, patterned “kamiko” paper items like business card holders and handbags are produced.
