読谷山花織
Yomitanzan-Hanaori textiles
読谷山花は沖縄県中頭郡読谷村で作られている織物です。読谷山花織の特徴は、織り地に先染めされた糸で花のような幾何学模様の文様を織り込んでいることです。素材は絹糸もしくは綿糸を用い、染める素材は琉球藍や福木（ふくぎ）、すおうなどを用いて染められます。伝統的な読谷山花織は琉球藍で染められた紺地に赤や黄、白色などで花模様を表します。花模様は基本的な単位の図柄が決まっていて、それぞれに意味があります。基本模様に縞や格子を組み合わせ、さらに複雑な模様を生み出した織物は、素朴ながら立体感のある花柄が華やかな雰囲気の織物となっています。
Yomitanzan-Hanaori textiles originate from Yomitan Village located in Okinawa. Yomitanzan Hanaori textiles are characterized by geometric and floral patterns using threads dyed prior to weaving. Silk or cotton threads are used and dyed with Ryuku indigo, Fukugi, or Suou. Traditional Yomitanzan-Hanaori features floral patterns in red, yellow, and white on a navy background. It is a very valuable fabric, traditionally only worn by residents of Yomitan village or Royalty and aristocrats.
