越後上布
Echigo Jofu
越後上布（えちごじょうふ）は、苧麻（からむし）という植物から作られる薄手の平織りの麻織物で、昔の越後国、現在の新潟県に当たる地域を原産地とします。越後上布の特徴は、布が織られた後、雪の上で洗われ、晒されることです。吸湿性が高く、通気性に優れ、防水性もあるため、夏用の着物地としてよく利用されてきました。一般的には経緯糸ともにラミー糸使用(苧麻の紡績糸)を使用します。国の重要無形文化財に指定され、その後ユネスコの無形文化遺産に登録されたものは、経緯糸共に苧麻を手績みした糸を使用し、いざり機で織るなど、伝統的な手作業での工程に則って織られています。
Echigo Jofu is a type of textile made from the Ramie plant and originates from Echigo Province, an old Japanese Province equivalent to modern-day Niigata prefecture. Echigo Jofu is unique in that after the cloth is woven, the product is washed and bleached on snow. Often, this fabric is used to make summer Kimono, as the textile is highly absorbent, breathable, and water-repellent.
