Hannou Oshima Tsumugi

Hanno Oshima Tsumugi is a finely patterned silk fabric from Hanno City in Saitama Prefecture, with roots tracing back to the Wadou era (708–715). While the region gained national recognition for silk production during the Genroku era, it later began producing tsumugi textiles modeled after Amami Oshima’s famous Oshima Tsumugi. Initially distributed as "Murayama Oshima Tsumugi" due to its sales center in Tokyo, it was rebranded as "Hanno Oshima Tsumugi" in 1977 to highlight its local identity. The fabric is dyed using a board-resist technique similar to Murayama’s but is distinctively made for men’s wear. Today, its legacy continues through exhibitions and repurposed items like parasols and smartphone cases.
