黄八丈

Kihachijō

黄八丈は、黄色、樺色、黒色の3色を基調とした絹織物です。染料は八丈島内に自生している植物の草木染で、黄色は八丈刈安(コブナ草)、樺色はマダミ(タブの木)の樹皮、黒色は椎の木の樹皮と沼浸けで染めて行きます。
媒染は榊・椿の灰汁(あく)など、アルミナ媒染によって鮮やかな発色が生まれ、独特の雅味と光沢を作り出しており、孫の代まで色褪せないといわれる卓越した染色技術が特徴です。

Yello Hachijo cloth originates from Hachijo Island, famous for Silk Production during the Muromachi period between 1382 and 1573. Kihachijo is mainly features colors yellow, brown, and black with striped or checked designs. Dyes are made from plants that grow naturally on the island, such as Hachijo Kariyasu, bark from a Madami, and bark from a chestnut tree. Other dyes that are painted on include extracts from camellia plants and evergreen trees. Once dyed, the thread is transformed into a beautiful and elegant fabric using a foot-operated loom or hand operated shuttle loom. Kihachijo is known for its exceptional dying techniques producing vibrant and long lasting colors.
