Gama saiku is a craft tradition passed down in the Hiruzen region and has been designated as a traditional craft by Okayama Prefecture. People weave together gama, or cattail reeds, to create unique and durable baskets and other woven items such as sandals, handbags, and snowshoes. While Japan’s bamboo basketry traditions are more widely known, Gama saiku is a distinct aesthetic and functional approach that takes advantage of the material’s strength and pliability. Gama crafts have traditionally been made as a winter pastime in Hiruzen, and this craft tradition continues to be passed down from generation to generation.
