Kurotaki Mizukumi mokkouhin

Mizukumi is an advanced woodworking craft used to make the offering boxes at Mt. Omine in the Edo period. The inclusion of the word “mizu” in the name refers to the fact that the corner joints of the boxes resemble the kanji character for water. Kurotaki Village, Yoshino County, Nara Prefecture, became a major center for joinery and carpentry crafts because of the local abundance of cedar, cypress, and zelkova wood. Traditional woodcarving techniques have been kept alive over time due to ongoing demand for these woodworking products from shrines and temples in Yamato.
