Ikkanbari

The traditional craft of Ikkanbari – that is, making items from layers of washi paper that are then coated in lacquer or stain – is attributed to Hirai Ikkan, who came to Japan from mainland China in the 1620s. Drawing from Chinese lacquer techniques, ikannbari craftsmen create a base layer from washi paper, bamboo, or another type of wood, then layer it with washi paper. Each piece is finished with a coating of lacquer or Kakishibu stain. The resulting products are lightweight yet strong and durable, and lacquered pieces are also waterproof, which makes them practical for use in everyday life.
