Kaminyuu Mokuchou

Located on the northern edge of the Suzuka Mountains, near the peak of Mount Reizan, Kaminyu (Maibara City, Shiga Prefecture) is home to craftsmen who specialize in traditional woodworking and finishing methods, which were traditionally used to make Buddhist altars. Woodworkers, woodcarvers, metal fitting makers, and lacquerers are among the region’s specialists. It is rare to have so many craftspeople in one village. Items carved in Kaminyu include carvings on the gaps and inner periphery of Buddhist altars, known as “butsudanmono,” and carvings on floats known as "danjiri." Other local craft items include pottery sculptures of raccoon dogs and frogs, toys, practical items such as tea trays and trays, and souvenirs.
