Shimoda pine crafts have been designated as a local craft of Shizuoka Prefecture. During the Edo period, skilled craftsmen from Shimoda and Kagaya began using black pine cut from the mountains of Izu to make a variety of pine crafts such as inkstone boxes, small drawers, and plates. Their skills have been passed down to successive generations who have continued to use traditional joinery techniques to create distinctive pieces characterized by the beauty of their color and wood grain.
