People in Gunma Prefecture began weaving baskets, handbags, and other items from local Akebia vines in the 1890s. In the 1960s, rattan vines were increasingly mixed in with the Akebia. The vines are soaked in the waters of Ikaho Onsen so that the iron in the hot springs softens and colors the plant material. Products made from Akebia and rattan are very strong, and the longer they are used, the more their luster develops.
