Shinsu Kumiko Saiku

"Shinshu" refers to the Nagano Prefecture region of Japan, which is known for its high-quality Japanese cypress (Kiso hinoki). Shinshu Kumiko thus refers to kumiko woodcrafts made with Kiso hinoki. Similar to kumiko craftsmen elsewhere in Japan, Shinshu Kumiko craftsmen carefully measure, cut, and slot together wooden pieces, relying on the precise fit of grooves and angles to create shoji, transoms, or other items that are strong and stable without using nails or other fasteners. They pay special attention to highlighting the natural beauty and quality of the Kiso hinoki wood. While Kumiko techniques were traditionally used for shoji screens, room dividers, and other architectural features in Japanese homes, they are now also being used to make contemporary furniture, decorative panels, and even lighting fixtures.
