The goma, or spinning top, is a traditional Japanese toy that delights users with its twirling motion. Goma have played a special role in Japanese culture and daily life since ancient times. They are often used as New Year’s decorations or as celebratory gifts symbolizing good luck, progress, and prosperity. Octagonal goma decorated with characters were a traditional craft in Tottori Prefecture. It is said that people play with it by passing around paper strips based on which character the top lands on when it falls over.
