Oyama koma, or spinning tops, are a common souvenir from the Oyama Mairi, a pilgrimage that people make to Mt. Oyama in Isehara City, Kanagawa Prefecture. Carpenters and other craftsmen used to carry huge wooden swords from Edo to purify themselves at the waterfall before making an offering and heading to the summit. Although the specific origins of Oyama koma are unknown, it is known that woodworkers made them during the Edo period, and the techniques they used have been passed down to the present day. The Oyama top has a distinctive axle and coloring, as it is traditionally painted with three colors: vermilion, purple, and indigo. These koma are seen as a lucky charm that bring good fortune.
