Mishima Town, Onuma District, Fukushima Prefecture, is a primary production area for handwoven baskets and other functional items made from plants such as hiroro, wild grapes, and silver vine. Plant material harvested in the mountainous areas of the Oku-Aizu region are used to weave carrying baskets, sieves, confectionery containers, cooking utensils, and other items that are characterized by their sturdiness and rustic yet tidy appearance. The craft techniques traditionally used to create these beautiful and functional products continue to be used today.
