Togouchi Kurimono

Togouchi carving refers to the traditional woodworking technique of kurimono as it is specifically practiced in the Togouchi area (now part of Akiota Town) in Hiroshima Prefecture. The craft was brought to Togouchi from Miyajima during the Taisho era (1912-1926) by craftspeople seeking access to wood sources. Craftsmen use hand tools such as chisels, woodworking planes, and willow knives to hollow out wood to create items like floating ladles (which float in liquid) and other utensils. A single workshop in Akiota continues to keep this unique craft traditional method alive.
