Togouchi Hikimono

Togouchi Hikimono is a traditional woodworking and lacquering craft of Hiroshima Prefecture. The origins of this craft tradition can be traced back to Ishida Tomiji, who moved from Shimane Prefecture to Togouchi Town (now Akiota Town, Yamagata County) in the mid-Meiji Period, where lacquerware was being produced through a division of labor between woodworkers and lacquerers. Togouchi Hikimono craftsmen use a potter's wheel and carving tools to transform pieces of oak, keyaki, or magnolia wood into bowls, tea cups, trays, vases, and other items. The pieces are sometimes finished with a coat of lacquer to further enhance their beauty and practical use.
