The name “sashimono” refers to the fact that craftsmen fit pieces of wood together without using nails and/or use a ruler in making the item. The result is wooden products with no visible joins on the outside. The history of sashimono can be traced back to the court carpenters in the Heian period (794-1185/1192). There are several schools of traditional sashimono in Japan, the most well-known of which are Kyo sashimono (Kyoto), Edo sashimono (Tokyo, formerly Edo), and Osaka Karaki sashimono (Osaka).
