Nikko geta, a traditional craft product that originated in Nikko's shrines and temples, and were worn when entering the grounds of Mount Nikko. They are said to be a practical improvement made in the mid-Meiji period from the gomen geta. Nikko geta are cool in summer and warm in winter, making them suitable for wear year-round. A zori top woven from bamboo skin is sewn onto a wooden base. The straps are also woven into the bamboo skin, which prevents snow from seeping in. These geta are very stable because there are gaps between the “teeth,” and the teeth widen toward the bottom.
