Kasukabe's paulownia boxes have a history and tradition that date back approximately 300 years. At the beginning of the Edo period, outstanding craftsmen from across Japan gathered to build Nikko Toshogu Shrine. Upon completion, many stayed in the area and continued to use the locally abundant paulownia wood to make bookcases, storage boxes, pillows, and other everyday items. Taking advantage of the wood’s strength, light weight, and moisture-regulating properties, paulownia boxes have been used to store a wide range of items, ranging from fine art and antiques to food. Recently, paulownia boxes with modern designs have become increasingly popular.
