Ita Sumou
熊本県八代市、日奈久（ひなぐ）温泉発祥の郷土玩具です。力士の両腕の真ん中の穴に棒を差し込み動かすと、相撲を取っているような動きをします。天保年間、肥後国で名をはせた関取「嶋ヶ崎宇太郎」は横綱に挑戦しようと江戸に向かう途中で両国回向院の阻止に逆らい、毒殺されことから、嶋ヶ崎を偲んで作られたとも伝えられています。
These local toys originated in Hinagu Onsen, Yatsushiro City, Kumamoto Prefecture. A stick inserted into the hole in the middle of the sumo wrestler's arms can be rotated so that it appears he is wrestling. The toy was reportedly made in memory of Shimagasaki Utaro, a famous sumo wrestler in Higo Province in the Tenpo era.
