Sakura bark crafts (also known as birch crafts) are a traditional craft of Kakunodate, Akita Prefecture. They are said to have started when Fujimura Hikoroku, a samurai of the Satake clan, learned craft techniques using mountain cherry bark that were handed down in the Ani region of Akita Prefecture in the mid-Edo period. Representative products include tea ceremony utensils such as tea canisters and tea chests, letter boxes, tea chests, brooches, and tie pins.
