Shuro Houki

Shuro houki are a traditional craft of Wakayama Prefecture. In the mountains of an area formerly known as Nogamiya, palm trees grew naturally and were cultivated. The dark brown fibers that wrap around the trunks of these trees are strong, rot-resistant, elastic, and durable, and because of these characteristics, many everyday items such as ropes, nets, scrubbing brushes, and more were made from them. The palm broom is one of these useful products. Made from natural fibers, it is characterized by its soft sweeping feel.
