Many different types of wooden bento, or lunch boxes, are made from cypress harvested in Kiso, Nagano Prefecture. Some are simple square boxes made from cypress alone, while others are finished with lacquer. Craftsmen make traditional handmade bento without using any nail. These items are prized because the wood absorbs excess moisture from the rice, and the antibacterial properties of the cypress and lacquer prevent the rice from spoiling.
