Toshihiko Inoue
Kyoto
Vision
Inoue has dedicated his life to revitalizing Kyoto mounting, an ancient and complex technique that combines natural materials with the artisanal techniques of binding hanging scrolls, folding screens, and sliding doors. To meet the needs of a changing market, Inoue is expressing traditional craft techniques in even more innovative ways. He proposes new designs for bozu fusuma (frameless sliding doors) that complement modern living spaces. His diverse works also include wall coverings made from washi paper and woven fabrics that are easy to install and repair, drop ceilings with unimaginable shapes that appear to be partially curved, and small paper rooms and tea rooms that can be folded up like tents. Inoue's work pays homage to natural materials and seeks to revive traditional techniques. By introducing sophisticated sliding doors that blend seamlessly with other cultures and lighting made from washi paper, Inoue hopes that people around the world who are fascinated by traditional Japanese crafts will further recognize and appreciate Japanese calligraphy and arts and crafts, sparking a demand for "All Japan" interiors.
