Vision

Yasuhiko Kusunoki, the third-generation owner of a small textile company in Kyoto's Tango region, known for its crepe silk fabrics, has stepped away from mechanized modern weaving to launch "Kusuka Fabric," a new leather textile brand handwoven on traditional wooden looms. The warp threads are made by hand-winding 1mm-thick leather with a core thread attached, while the weft threads are hand-cut leather threads woven with a jacquard weave, resulting in a rich, 100% leather texture. Kusunoki says that this can only be achieved by handweaving, where artisans twist the weft threads alternately from side to side, to highlight the "fluffiness, shadows, and soft texture" of the fabric. By utilizing Tango crepe* techniques and aiming to create and sell new leather fabrics developed by artisans, he aims to pass on the value of Tango textiles to the next generation.
